Convocation-2012
The most prestigious event of the College of Engineering Roorkee (COER) the 9th Convocation was commemorated with great pomp and show on Saturday, March 17, 2012. A total of 766 students were awarded their Graduate and Post Graduate degrees. 8 students were awarded Gold medals and another 8 students the Silver medals for scoring top positions in their courses at the university examinations.
Professor D. P. Agrawal, Chairman, Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) was the Chief Guest on the occasion. During his lecture he pointed out that market trends are changing these days, a bright career and successful life demands “Marketable Skills” from our youth and the responsibility lies on the shoulders of educational institutions. He explained that there is no doubt College of Engineering Roorkee (COER) produces a number of good quality engineers every year, who not only pursue good careers but prove to be good human beings throughout! Recalling a quote from Swami Vivekananda he elucidated that education helps in discovery of the inner self. The real knowledge, he added lies within ‘No knowledge comes from Outside, it is all inside’ as Swami Vivekananda believed. He further, suggested the students to use their education for self discovery and self analysis.
Professor D. S. Chauhan, Vice-Chancellor, Uttarakhand Technical University, presided over the function. Congratulating the degree recipients and their parents on their achievements he suggested that they must continuously strive to find new ideas and creative ways of handling various situations. Life today is so unpredictable that it needs ‘re-tooling and re-engineering’ everyday. Change is inevitable, but how to mould that change according to our own preferences and requirements is real “Engineering in real sense”. He further advised the students to be perpetual learners because learning offers opportunities to improve and leads to excellence.
COER Chairman, Mr. J. C. Jain welcomed all the dignitaries. 3 students - Riti Arora, Amzad and Tanvi Taneja were awarded Seth Roshan Lal Jain Trophy for being the overall topper in a particular course. Director General COER, Dr. Gopal Ranjan, presented the report related to achievements, during the past one year. On behalf of the COER family he congratulated Prabhjot Singh, B.Tech (4th Year) Computer Science, who scored 39th All India Rank with 99.97 percentile in GATE-2012 examination also 16 COERian, who also scored above 99 percentile in the same examination.
He indicated that during the last 14 years COER has made a mark in the academic world. The credit goes to intelligent COERians, dedicated faculty and multidimensional support of management. The industry institute interaction through projects, summer training has been very useful. The university merit positions secured by COERians are memorable.
COER Trustee Mr. Shreyance Jain, COER Secretary Mr. Subhash Jain, Dean (Student Welfare and Admin) Col G. S. Bisht also shared their ideas and views with the students on the Convocation day.
